The typical African Dad looks very serious, seemingly unapproachable, and most importantly he’s perceived as a man of few words. Yet, behind this tough front lies centuries of life experiences and wisdom passed down from our forefathers.
Personally, I remember my dad often quoted this proverb: “Tí igi bá subú lórí igi, ti òkè e rẹ̀ là n gbé” which means “When trees fall on each other, you start by lifting up the one on the very top.” As unassuming as the proverb might sound, the wisdom displayed here is highlighting the possibility of hurting one’s back if you unknowingly begin lifting from the bottom of the pile. Sounds like common sense, right? In practical terms, this proverb also infers that when you are faced with many challenges, start by addressing the most crucial of them so that you have better visibility and reserve some energy to tackle the rest.
This experience isn’t unique to me as this is a part of a larger African Culture spanning across the entire Continent. As a new father, I often think about pearls of wisdom that my “African Dad” has imparted on me over the last few decades just as his did. Driving from the gym on December 31, 2018, the idea to share these nuggets of wisdoms on T-shirts was born. Still drenched and basking in my runner’s high, I excitedly shared it with my co-founders and after multiple iterations of this idea, African Dad is now a reality!

African Dad plans to not only spread this traditional wisdom to current and future generations through our apparel but to help spur them to achieve greater heights by funding their education through partnerships with educational organizations in Africa.
We typically ship out all orders within 1-3 business days unless it’s a pre-order. Delivery date depends on your location and selected shipping method. At most, shipment delivery can take 4-7 business days within the U.S. and 2-4 weeks outside the U.S. after the order is processed.

Unfortunately, we do not accept returns. However, exchange of unworn and unwashed items are acceptable if we receive the item(s) within 10 business days after you received it. The customer will be responsible for shipping cost associated with returning the item and shipment of the exchanged item(s).
We do not currently do custom orders. We currently only sell ready-made apparel listed on our website.
We are always updating our inventory with new designs and apparel. We may restock sold out items as needed. If the item will be restocked we’ll provide you with the estimated timeframe to expect the item.
